What is ASN?

The application for an ASN (Autonomous System Number) must be made through one of the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), which operate under the authority of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

There are currently five RIRs worldwide: the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC), the Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC), and the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN).

Applicants should apply through the RIR corresponding to their region.

Why Analyze Top ASN Rankings and Market Share?

    1. Identify Major Traffic Carriers
    2. In many countries, just 2 or 3 ASNs (typically major ISPs) may carry the vast majority of end-user traffic. Deploying CDN infrastructure within these networks ensures broad user coverage with minimal investment.

    3. Maximize Resource Efficiency
    4. Without ASN-level insights, resources might be wasted on low-traffic networks. Prioritizing deployment within dominant ASNs ensures higher ROI and better user performance.

    5. Improve Peering Strategies
    6. Knowing which ASNs dominate the market allows CDN providers to establish BGP peering relationships with key ISPs, reducing latency and transit costs.

    7. Support Smarter Traffic Engineering
    8. ASN ranking and distribution data can be used in conjunction with smart DNS routing, Anycast, and edge health metrics to enable more intelligent content delivery.
